FishBase

FishBase is the world’s biggest encyclopedia about fish, freely available since 1988.

Our mission

FishBase is the world’s biggest encyclopedia about fish, freely available online. FishBase was founded in 1988, and its goals are to:

  • provide scientifically published information about fish
  • be a long-term deposit for information about fish
  • be a platform for information and education about fish and fishery
  • and to provide free and easily accessible information and analysis tools, with particular focus on users in developing countries.

FishBase is an international consortium with 13 member institutions, Sweden is represented in the consortium by the Swedish Museum of Natural History. The main office of FishBase is in Los Baños, Philippines.
