While our collections are used daily by the museum's own researchers, they are also in great demand by researchers from around the world. Diligent users also include advanced and specialized amateurs, primarily from Sweden.
The high demand as well as the frequency of loans from our collections not only demonstrate their high status - but also serve as an effective means to process and refine the collections.
The foundation of the Swedish Museum of Natural History lies is our collections. As a result of nearly 300 years of research expeditions and collection gathering, they now hold approximately 11 million items of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, and tissue samples.
The collections consist of items preserved in various ways, logically interconnected, and arranged systematically. The collections are all closely tied to the activities taking place at our research units.
